Artist in Residence Programme
The Arts Centre Artist in Residence Programme is currently by invitation only.
There is no formal application form for the programme. We are particularly interested in projects that would not be possible without the support of The Arts Centre or the use of our site/ facilities. Priority will be given to projects that use The Arts Centre site and/or the activites that happen here and/or the history of the site as a point of reference. Interested artists are invited to provide a proposal that covers the following material:
1. The Artist's career highlights with illustrations/recordings etc and referees as appropriate
2. A description of the project they would like to work on at The Arts Centre. The project needs to be able to be completed in 1 - 2 months (the usual length of residencies is 2 months) and needs to involve the wider community in some way - usually the artist offers master classes or seminars, or works with community groups or interacts with members of the public in some way. We are especially interested in projects that involve people or groups who might otherwise not be involved in 'art' or have a high degree of interaction with local practitioners of the art form involved. We expect that depending on the art form the residency would end with an exhibition, performance or installation.
3. An indication of any costs associated with the project - we can usually help with some of these but the artist would need to indicate how they were going to be covered, and what arrangements had been made with regard to venues etc.
4. If the artist is from overseas they need to confirm that they will cover the costs of travel to NZ and obtain a work permit.
Arts Centre Support
The Arts Centre provides the following support during the residency:
- free accommodation in the Artist in Residence apartment at The Arts Centre. The apartment is one bedroom, furnished and enjoys wonderful views of the botanic gardens and The Arts Centre quadrangles.
- Use of the Artist in Residence studio in the Botany Building. Most suited to visual artists this room has good natural light and is approximately 6m x 6m (As both the apartment and studio are on the first floor of their respective buildings, the residency would not suit someone unable to manage stairs)
- A Carpark in the Hereford Street carpark
- an honorarium of NZ$500 per week less tax for the duration of the residency
- limited assistance with project costs and with organising events, making contact with peers and the wider arts community in Christchurch
The Artist needs to:
- be in residence at The Arts Centre during the residency
- complete the agreed project work as outlined in their application
- cover all living costs including power and telephone in the apartment
- cover all other costs associated with the project not covered by The Arts Centre
- arrange work permits if required
- cover the cost of travel to and from Christchurch, New Zealand
- be available for a limited number of media interviews and other public relations work during the residency
- acknowledge The Arts Centre on any publicity material
- Provide The Arts Centre with a brief written report on the work carried out during the residency, including any reviews/media coverage etc at the end of the residency.
- Make their own arrangements for any show/performance or exhibition - including negotiating a venue (we'd prefer it to be at The Arts Centre but realise that this is not always possible).
