Ernest, Lord Rutherford is recognised world wide as the 'Father of the Atom'.

Born in New Zealand, in 1894 Rutherford graduated from Canterbury College, Christchurch. During his time at the college he began his lifetime of research working at the forefront of electrical technology.

Visitors can experience his life and science through a dynamic multimedia experience, meet him in the Den where he worked and studied, listen to historic broadcasts and recollections of his character and be part of the daily life at Canterbury College in the 1890s.


School visits

Rutherford's Den is an excellent place to bring your class for a visit. The Education Team can plan a programme that links to the social science or science curriculum from year 4 to year 13.
