About Ernest Rutherford
Ernest, Lord Rutherford is recognised world wide as the 'Father of the Atom'.
Born in New Zealand, in 1894 Rutherford graduated from Canterbury College, Christchurch. During his time at the college he began his lifetime of research working at the forefront of electrical technology.
Prior to the February 2011 earthquake, visitors could experience his life and science through a dynamic multimedia experience, meet him in the Den where he worked and studied, listen to historic broadcasts and recollections of his character and be part of the daily life at Canterbury College in the 1890s.
The Rutherford's Den Education Team can visit your school and plan a programme that links to the social science or science curriculum from year 4 to year 13.
