2010 Thursday Lunchtime Concert SeriesPrincipal Sponsor: The PressArtistic Director: Mark HobsonSeason Two: 22 July- 16 September 22 July: Niels Bijl (The Netherlands) Niels Bijl, the internationally renowned classical Dutch saxophonist will perform in the Great Hall as part of his Australia and New Zealand tour to promote his latest album, Mosaik. He will be accompanied at this concert by pianist Alison Holden. Bijil is a member of a number of ensembles, including the outstanding saxophone quartet, Aurelia. Go through to the Concert FM archive where you can search for the audio. 29 July: Solid Energy Chorus of Southern Opera, A Midwinter Concert Southern Opera’s 40 strong Solid Energy Chorus will fill the Great Hall with voices in A Midwinter Concert. Directed by Sharolyn Kimmorley, the chorus will perform pieces by Mendelssohn, Mozart, Verdi, Mascagni, Strauss, Lehar and Gilbert and Sullivan. This concert will feature singers from Solid Energy’s Singer Development Programme. 5 Aug: Martin Riseley, Paganini’s 24 Caprices for solo violin, part 2 New Zealander, Dr Martin Risely is Head of Strings at the New Zealand School of Music and will perform part 2 of Paganini’s 24 Caprices for Solo Violin. Martin performed part 1 (Caprices 1-12) in Season One of the Series, impressing audiences with his mastery of this virtuosic work. A violinist of vast international experience, this is a treat not to be missed. 12 August: Mark Walton (OA) Originally from Christchurch, clarinetist and saxophonist, Mark Walton has been Chair of Woodwind and Chair of Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music for 20 years. Mark now shares his time, musical talents and energy between Australia and New Zealand. He was awarded an Order of Australia in 2005. 19 August: Tresoli Based in Canterbury, Tresoli comprise Susan Farmer (violin), Jenny Davey (cello) and Rosemary Stott (piano). All 3 musicians have a long history of performing and teaching in New Zealand and abroad. Tresoli was formed in 2000 and will perform music by John Ireland and Felix Mendelssohn. 26 August: Tango La Luna Tango La Luna presents a new sound on the New Zealand music scene - mysterious, seductive arrangements that mix traditional European sounds and instruments with the passion and sense of longing of the Argentine tango. Tango La Luna feature: Wytze Hoekstra (bandoneon), Mark Hobson (clarinet), Christopher Reddington (piano), Nicole Reddington (cello) and Gerald Oliver (double bass). This concert will also feature Argentine tango dancer specialists. 2 September: Chamber Music New Zealand, Contest Finalists This concert will feature some of the finalist ensembles made up of high-school age musicians in the 2010 New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest. 12 groups are chosen from around New Zealand for the finals of this contest. Remarkably, 4 of the 12 groups this year come from Christchurch. These 4 groups have been invited to perform at this concert. 9 September: Margot Button, Life in a Moment Soprano, Margot Button has recently returned to New Zealand after a number of years in North America Her concert, Life in a Moment is a journey through love and loss with the passionate lieder of Robert Schuman and Johannes Brahms, and the art songs of Frank Bridge and Benjamin Britten. Margot will be accompanied by pianist Mark Secker. 16 September: Zephyr Ensemble The Zephyr ensemble, comprising 5 principal woodwind players from the NZSO will close Season Two of the Series in the Great Hall. Bridget Douglas (flute), Robert Orr (oboe), Phil Green (clarinet), Robert Weeks (bassoon) and Ed Allen (French horn) will play a diverse musical programme of quintets by Douglas Lilburn and Ken Wilson and finally a charming, disquieting early work by Luciano Berio called Opus Number Zoo. Involving text as well as music, it is a theatrical piece that is fun and entertaining yet with a serious message. An unusual treat, it is sure to delight audiences.
