Exhibition Length
The Cloisters Gallery is available for hire from Tuesday to Sunday throughout the year..
Hire Charges & Commission
Hire charges are $150.00 plus gst per week. The Arts Centre does not request any commission from sales, however if the hirer would like a person to mind the gallery for the duration of the exhibition they must arrange this, The Arts Centre does not provide a minder.
The Gallery Features
The brick walls are painted in a neutral colour with polished wood floors to complement. Tall elegant windows provide ample natural light into the gallery.
Picture Rail
A picture rail runs right around the gallery, it is a height of 2.6m from the floor.
Gallery Dimensions
The dimensions of the gallery are 9.2m by 5.3m. A floor plan can be provided if it is not attached to this information.
Equipment Available with Gallery
Approximately 40 picture hooks, two chairs, various tables and plinths are available for your use if required. There are also 4 large and 5 small pin boards available, these need to be booked in advance as other clients in The Arts Centre often use them.

Outside Sandwich Boards & Posters
Sandwich boards are not allowed at The Arts Centre. An A3 size poster board is provided for you in the North Quadrangle outside the Gallery entrance. This holds 2 posters, which you are responsible for providing.
Gallery Lighting
The gallery has fluorescent tube lighting and approximately nine large floodlights.
Exhibition lighting can be supplied for you by A & C Lighting.
Opening Hours
The Arts Centre permanent galleries and studios are open 10.00am – 5.00pm, seven days a week, however you are welcome to set your own hours for your exhibition. You are also welcome to hold an opening evening where you can supply food and alcohol if you wish.
Capacity of Gallery
The maximum legal capacity of the Gallery is 50 people. This must not be exceeded at any time.
Liquor
If you wish to sell alcohol on the evening, a special licence is required. This may be obtained from the Christchurch City Council. The special licence must be displayed on the evening and a copy given to venues prior to the event. Please note the Council may take some time in processing the application so advance planning is required.
Pack-in and Pack-out Times
Pack-in may commence from 8.30am on the first day of the exhibition and pack out must be completed by 12.30 midnight on the final evening.
Access to Gallery / Key
On your arrival for pack-in, a key to the gallery will be issued to you for the duration of the exhibition. The key must be returned by 12.30 midnight on the final day. If the Venues office is unattended the key may be placed in the ‘drop box’ on the door. The loss or failure to return the key will incur the charges necessary for replacement locks and keys.
Publicity
The Arts Centre can help publicise your exhibition via the display of posters and flyers.
If you also complete The Arts Centre “Event Listing Form” your details will be included on The Arts Centre’s database, please read the form for more detailed information in regards to this.
It is strongly recommended that you also do your own publicity, produce posters to be put up around The Arts Centre and also in public places like the libraries and community notice boards.
Exhibitions Involving Electricity
All pieces involving electricity must have a current certificate of electrical safety from a registered electrician. Overloading and blowing of fuses may result in additional charges so Venues staff should be consulted.
Additional Details
This is a very popular exhibition space, so you will need to book well in advance, especially during the summer.
Only quality handmade products may be sold, and a New Zealand theme is preferred.
Nothing is to be adhered to any surfaces. Only Blue Tac may be used. No Sellotape or tacks are allowed. Exhibits must be hung from the railings using fishing line.
The Arts Centre reserves the right to use the ‘second’ room for storage and may require access to the room at any time.
You are welcome to arrange the use of The Arts Centre Information’s EFTPOS facilities, however due to bank charges there will be a 5% commission charged on each transaction. Please contact Hayley at Arts Centre Information on 363 2836 if you wish to make use of the EFTPOS facility.
