Rutherford’s Den (1877)

Restoring The Den was an opportunity to create a clear distinction between old and new, with contemporary fit-out materials complementing the historic timber, brickwork and stone.

History and heritage

Rutherford’s Den is dedicated to the memory of Nobel Prize winner Ernest, Lord Rutherford who studied, attended lectures and undertook his earliest experiments at Canterbury College.

Prior to the Canterbury earthquakes, Rutherford’s Den was a multimedia exhibition space and education centre that was a must-see for all local school children and adults alike.
