Harete’s project focuses on her Kuia who was born at Araiteuru, the Model Pā, beside Victoria Lake during the time of the NZ Exhibition 1906. Her Kuia was named after the Pā. During the residency, Harete has been able to walk to the site where she was born, photos of the site in 1906 have enabled her to locate where the Pā was on the lake.
Harete has been making paper from harakeke sourced from the botanical gardens, colours from trees that were there in 1906 and trees from the NZ native garden. Her art is all natural, hand-made from scratch and during the open days, you will be able to see her process, the paper and colours she has made from trees in the garden and hear the stories of her Kuia Araiteuru and her life.
