Te Waiata o te Kuaka with Maungarongo Te Kawa

The Song of the Kuaka

Venue: Te Whare Tapere

Kua kite te kohanga kuaka? Who has seen the nest of the kuaka?’

The Kuaka is a significant manu in te Ao Māori. It migrates from the Arctic Circle to Ōtautahi and it is a tohu for many iwi. When traveling to Norway for a residency with Studio AiR Green, Maungarongo Te Kawa came across a kōrero from Whaea Sheridan Waitai, describing why this manu travels so far.

The six quilts in this exhibition tell this pūrākau, adapted by Maungarongo, and read by Āio Te Uruao Tamati-Elliffe.

Kā mihi nui to Sheridan Waitai, Objectspace, Norwegian Crafts, Zoe Black, Creative New Zealand and Āio Te Uruao Tamati-Elliffe.
