Rutherford’s Den Lecture Theatre

Follow in the footsteps of one of New Zealand’s greatest scientists and deliver your next presentation in a Victorian lecture theatre.

Rutherford’s Den Lecture Theatre at the Arts Centre te Matatiki Toi Ora was one of the actual classrooms Ernest, Lord Rutherford and his peers studied in.

Built in the 1870s, the lecture theatre has been extensively strengthened, repaired and restored post-earthquake. Retaining its original features – wooden seating, wood panelling, original windows, beautiful brickwork and 19th century graffiti – it has a unique historic atmosphere.
