Sir Julius von Haast

Julius_von_Haast_1860s-1870sJulius von Haast was Canterbury’s provincial geologist from 1861 to 1868. He was also the first director of Canterbury Museum, starting the museum from his collections.

His cheerful personality and world renowned reputation as a geologist was too good to be ignored and he was later appointed Chair of Geology at Canterbury College in 1876 while carrying on his work at the Museum.
