The Brainy Beanies Exhibition, organized by Brain Tumour Support NZ, is making its Christchurch debut! More than just a fundraiser, this special event brings together crafters from across New Zealand to create and donate handcrafted beanies, with every dollar raised supporting individuals and whānau affected by brain tumours.
Using a variety of techniques — knitting, crocheting, felting, and textile arts — each beanie is a one-of-a-kind creation, reflecting the talent, care, and creativity of its maker. Every beanie carries a Brainy Beanie label, a simple but powerful reminder that the wearer is connected to a community that cares.
First launched in Waikato in 2021, Brainy Beanies has grown into something much bigger than a fundraiser. It has become a connector of communities, a symbol of love and support, and a flagship event for Brain Tumour Support NZ. The project’s ethos—"Created with love, by someone who cares"—captures the deep personal connections that make this initiative so special.
At the Christchurch exhibition, visitors will be immersed in a vibrant display of handcrafted beanies, each telling its own story. From cozy classics to intricate, artistic designs, some creations are so unique, they border on wearable art. Every beanie on display will be available for purchase, with proceeds directly funding Brain Tumour Support NZ’s essential services, including the Brain Box care packages provided to newly diagnosed patients.
This marks the first time Brainy Beanies comes to Christchurch, offering locals a chance to be part of this heartwarming movement. By attending, visitors don’t just witness a celebration of craftsmanship and community—they become part of a cause that brings comfort, connection, and support to those facing the challenges of a brain tumour across New Zealand.
All the beanies will be on show and for sale at thee event! There will be mirrors for people to see what they look like in their beanies and trying on is welcomed.
Adult Beanies are $25 and Child Beanies are $10-15 - Eftpos available
Artists' Bios
The talented artists behind Brainy Beanies are everyday Kiwis with extraordinary hearts—individuals and knitting groups from all over New Zealand who pour love and care into every stitch. Each beanie is more than just a piece of clothing; it is a symbol of compassion, connection, and community support.
Many of these crafters have a personal connection to brain tumours—they may have lost a loved one, supported a friend through their diagnosis, or even faced their own journey with a brain tumour. For them, creating these beanies is a deeply personal way to honour, remember, and give back. Others are dedicated makers who simply want to use their skills for good, contributing to a cause that brings warmth and hope to those in need.
What makes this initiative truly special is its ability to bring people together. From solo knitters working quietly at home to bustling community groups gathering over cups of tea, the Brainy Beanies project has woven a network of kindness across the country.
