CCC Annual Plan 2026/27 - Iconic Heritage Buildings

This is our chance to restore ‘the Dux’

In the past nine months, we have been in discussions with the council on how to revive the Student Union building (formerly the Dux) as a brew bar, relaxed restaurant, and live music venue.

If restoration funding were forthcoming, we would be ready to get on with this project. The Student Union building (formerly the Dux) could be open in two years for a fraction of the iconic heritage building funds.

Why this matters for ratepayers

The Arts Centre’s buildings and spaces enable public access, event use, and tenant occupancy. As a result, restoration unlocks ongoing benefit to the local economy and enhances Christchurch’s position as a forward-looking city.

Along with many non-financial benefits (cultural, historical, personal, educational), investment in restoring The Arts Centre:

  • Supports local jobs and small businesses
  • Increases central city activity (improving safety and vibrancy)
  • Strengthens tourism yield without requiring large new infrastructure
  • Protects previous public and philanthropic investment

Overall

It’s very pleasing that the Council is acknowledging the importance of Christchurch’s iconic heritage buildings and we wholly support that.

Have your say

We encourage you to read the proposal for yourselves.

If, like us, you are excited by getting a live music and hospitality venue back in a restored Student Union soon, tell the council. To comment on the iconic buildings, go to section 4 in the submission form.

Council reviews submissions as they come in, so the sooner the better.

All our heritage buildings are important, and it’s extremely positive that the city council is acknowledging this. Be early and make a submission by mid-March.
