China’s acclaimed Amber Quartet joins leading Canterbury musicians, led by Professor Mark Menzies, for an inspiring evening of chamber music.

This extraordinary evening features a rich repertoire spanning from Debussy’s iconic String Quartet in G minor, Op.10 and Mendelssohn’s brilliant Octet in E-flat major, Op.20, to the contemporary Chinese work Totem by Zhang Zhao, and concludes with a heartfelt arrangement of the beloved Māori love song Pokarekare Ana. It is a magnificent celebration of cross-cultural musical dialogue, where Eastern and Western traditions converge to create an unforgettable auditory journey.

Amber Quartet: Founded in 2005 at the Central Conservatory of Music, the Amber Quartet is China’s most internationally acclaimed professional string quartet.

As the first Chinese chamber group to win top awards at major international competitions, they made history by claiming the Grand Prize and Best Modern Work Performance at the 2013 Melbourne Asia Pacific International Chamber Music Competition.

They have toured extensively across Europe, North America and Oceania. Most notably, as official Chinese cultural representatives, they performed at the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony Prelude Concert with pianist Lang Lang, earning wide acclaim as China’s leading musical ambassadors.

Mentored by world-renowned chamber music masters, the Quartet upholds top classical performance standards, performing masterpieces across centuries while creating cross-cultural works blending Eastern and Western traditions.

Supported by prestigious institutions and performing on rare Italian antique instruments, they continue to promote Chinese chamber music globally as distinguished cultural ambassadors.
