Boil Up - Hākari

Josh Hunter (Ngāti Tūwharetoa) from Whakapapa Your Kai and Base Food by Fire along with Ngaio Cowell (Ngaati Te Ata Waiohua, Waikato, Ngāti Porou) from Tipu Toi and Te Whare Tapere, are back this Matariki to bring more kai based Kaupapa.

A Boil Up is a common kai in Māori households. It is a form of stew, containing root vegetables, pork bones, puha and really whatever else was available to bulk it out. It is kai designed to feed whānau and community for less. The reason this name was chosen is because it is a kaupapa the team believes in; providing for many, creating access for nourishing kai from the heart.

Held in The Great Hall inside Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre, this will be a very special evening to come together to feast. The crew will be cooking over fire, showcasing some of our incredible kai to feed the people.

The kai by Chef Josh Hunter (Ngāti Tūwharetoa) of BOIL UP, Base Food By Fire and @whakapapa_of_your_kai, has been designed in a way the respects the kaupapa of a boil up, community and connection.

This hākari is marae styles, working with Josh and Ngaio’s connections within this takiwā and the Eat NZ Kaitaki whānau of growers, fishers, makers and hunters; demonstrating how a community can share mātauranga through kai.

There will be some musical soundings as well, but gather your whānau, friends and colleagues and join us to celebrate Matariki with kai!
