Jazz manouche is a sophisticated and appealing style emerging in France nearly 100 years ago, drawing on American jazz, European folk and classical music, as well as Eastern rhythms and tonalities.

Swing 42 presents this music in fresh and evolving ways, using traditional gypsy manouche guitar, clarinet, saxophone, double bass and mixed percussion. The individual performers’ diverse musical backgrounds are drawn together by their shared passion for this historical musical period.

Their repertoire presents musical “riddles” to solve in the playful and adventurous context of group improvisation, making their performances unique and emotionally exhilarating listening experiences. Gypsy swing is traditionally community focussed, accessible to all kinds of listeners and musicians, conveying a sense of conviviality, empathy and hope. This concert will be an exciting journey through thrilling musical terrain.

    Musicians:

    Reuben Derrick - clarinet/saxophone

    Keith Petch - manouche guitar

    Michael Kime - double bass

    Doug Brush - percussion

This event is part of the Altiora Live series hosted by The Arts Centre between 19 September - 17 October 2025 (not 3 October).
