Matariki 2025

The Changing Universe

Monday 9 June 2025

Time

6.00PM – 7.00PM

Venue: Great Hall

Each night new stars in distant galaxies flash into existence before fading away to never be seen again. Every flash marks a colossal explosion created by dying stars, and by objects at the limits of our understanding such as black holes. Join us as we explore the different explosions we find out in the Universe and what we expect to find with telescopes on the ground and in space.

Dr Ryan Ridden is a Post Doctoral Fellow at the University of Canterbury, School of Physical & Chemical Sciences, Faculty of Science. His fields of research are stellar astronomy and planetary systems, cosmology and extragalactic astronomy. He was awarded the Rutherford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2022 by the Royal Society Te Apārangi, and his research is fuelling the next generation of insights, one starry night at a time.

This event is a part of our Matariki 2025 programme happening between 7 - 22 June. View the full line-up of events.
